VICTOR OVERVIEW

The Victor digital talking book player only plays "DAISY" compatible books, such as RFB&D's AudioPlus® books. The Victor can perform a variety of functions, including locating the page you wish to read, placing bookmarks, and adjusting the playback speed.

The top of the Victor has a slotted speaker. All of the directions in this guide refer to the Victor when the speaker is in the upper left-hand corner.

On the back right corner of the Victor is a round button. This is the power button. To the left of the power button is the power input for connecting the Victor to an electrical outlet. On the back left corner is a serial port, which is not currently operable. On the right side of the unit towards the front is the headphone jack.

The top of the Victor has a faceplate with many different buttons. There are two columns of buttons, one on the right side and one on the left. In between the columns is another set of buttons, arranged like the number pad on a telephone.

The following is a list of these buttons and a general description of what they do:

Left Side of the Faceplate:

On the left side of the faceplate, there are four oval-shaped keys lined up vertically. The top button is the KEY DESCRIBER button. When this button is on, you can press any other button to hear its function.

Below the KEY DESCRIBER is the BOOKMARK key which allows you to place, jump to and delete bookmarks.

Below the BOOKMARK key is the GO TO PAGE key. Use this button to jump to a page entered on the numbered keypad.

Below the GO TO PAGE key is the QUICK BOOKMARK key, which allows you to quickly place and store one bookmark.

Center of the Faceplate:

In the center of the faceplate are 12 buttons, arranged like the numbered keypad of a telephone. Most of the numbered keys also have other functions, which are described below:

The 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys are arrow-shaped with raised tactile arrows on their edges, and point, respectively, up, left, right and down.

The 2 and 8 keys allow you to perform advanced navigation commands by scrolling up or down to different navigation levels.

The 4 and 6 keys allow you to move backward or forward to search RFB&D's AudioPlus books by chapter, section or sub-section.

The 1 key is the BOOKSHELF key, which can tell you the title of the current book.

The 3 key is the HISTORY key, which allows you to quickly return to places you have recently been.

The 5 key is the WHERE AM I? key and has a tactile dot. This key allows you to find out what page you are on, what navigation level, and the title of the book.

The 9 key is the SLEEP MODE key, which allows you to program a delay period before the Victor shuts off.

The 0 key is the INFORMATION key, which can give you information about the current book, including number of pages, time elapsed and remaining, and number of bookmarks placed.

The * key is used to confirm an entered command while the # key cancels an entered command.

Below the numbered keypad, there are three keys in a row:

The key on the left is arrow-shaped and points left. This is the REWIND key.

The rectangular key to the right of this is the PLAY/STOP key.

The FASTFORWARD key is to the right of PLAY/STOP. It is arrow-shaped and points right.

Right Side of the Faceplate:

On the right side of the faceplate, in a column, there are four keys lined up vertically. From the top down, the first three buttons have grooves in their centers, making them arrow-shaped.

Below the tone key is the speed control button, which is used to decrease or increase the reading speed.

Below the speed control button is the volume button.

Below the volume button is the eject button.

CD-ROM DRIVE

ADVANCED NAVIGATION

An Explanation of the Levels in RFB&D's AudioPlus Books

RFB&D's AudioPlus books can be navigated forward and backward. They can also be navigated according to different levels. All Of RFB&D's AudioPlus books can be navigated by page and by major headings. Usually, the major heading is a chapter. For example, the major heading in a book about dogs might be the chapters – Large Dogs, Medium Dogs, and Small Dogs. On the RFB&D AudioPlus disc, the chapters would be considered level one.

To Search by Levels

In the center of the faceplate is a numbered keypad, just like the keypad on a push button telephone. Most of the buttons are oval-shaped. The 2, 4, 6, and 8 keys are arrow-shaped and have tactile arrows on them.

Searching by Chapter – Level One

Press the 2 key or the 8 key until you hear "Level One."

Press the 6 key to move forward until the chapter you want is announced.

Press the 4 key to move backward through the chapters.

Once you release the key, the Victor will continue to play the CD until you press another arrow key.

Searching by Sections and Sub-Headings – Levels 2, 3, and 4

Some books can also be searched by sections and sub-headings. Referring to our example above, perhaps the chapters in the dog book are divided into sections. For example, the chapter on Big Dogs has a section titled, "Rescue Dogs" and a section titled "Guard Dogs" and a section titled "Hunting Dogs." On the RFB&D AudioPlus disc, these sections would be Level Two.

To find Level Two:

Press the 2 key or the 8 key until you hear "Level Two."

Press the 6 key to move forward until the section you want is announced.

Press the 4 key to move backward through the sections.

Once you release the key, the Victor will continue to play the CD until you press another arrow key.

Some of RFB&D's AudioPlus books can be searched by subheading, within a section. For example, in the section on Rescue Dogs, there may be three subheadings: Dalmatians, St. Bernards, and Newfoundlands. If you wanted to find one of these subheadings, you would search by Level Three.

To find Level Three:

Press the 2 key or the 8 key until you hear "Level Three."

Press the 6 key to move forward until the sub-heading you want is announced.

Press the 4 key to move backward through the sub-heading.

Once you release the key, the Victor will continue to play the CD until you press another arrow key.

In some books, you may even be able to search by Level Four, sub-sections. Say, for example, that under each rescue dog sub-section there were stories about specific dogs. If you wanted to find one of these stories, you would search by Level Four.

To find Level Four:

Press the 2 key or the 8 key until you hear "Level Four."

Press the 6 key to move forward until the sub-section you want is announced.

Press the 4 key to move backward through the sub-section.

Once you release the key, the Victor will continue to play the CD until you press another arrow key.

I am trying to use the advanced navigation steps to search by major heading, section, etc. and am unable to access the level I want.

Check the announcement at the beginning of the book to determine the type of book that you have. RFB&D's AudioPlus books that were converted from analog recordings can only be searched by Level 1 - major headings and by page. The announcement "About this RFB&D Digital Talking Book" is played at the start, right after the title. It's also a Level 1 heading so you can navigate back to it if you're somewhere in the book. This announcement will tell you if it was converted. To navigate back to the opening announcement, press the up- or down-arrow key until you hear "Level 1." Press the left-arrow key until you hear the title announcement. The book announcement will begin to play right after the title announcement.

Press the up-arrow key or down-arrow key to determine how many levels of navigation the book has.
Make sure you're at the correct heading level. If you're at the highest, Level 1, you will skip over all lower level sections. If you are the lowest level for the specific title, you should be able to navigate to all the headings included in the digital version of the book.
