We Dedicate this Book to

Ms. Christine Ranaghan for sharing with us the joy of reading

Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic for changing our lives

Mrs. Janet Objut for introducing the RFB&D to our class

Our journey began on Wednesday, October 31, 2001, when Mrs. Christine Ranaghan from the Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic visited our 5th grade class in room 301 at Roosevelt School. She said she was going to give us new machines that were called Digital Talking Books. They are made by the Victor Machine Company. The new machines would make it easier for us to find the correct page, and it would do many other things.

We were waiting anxiously for the machines to come. When we finally found out that we had a package, we ran down the stairs. We were very excited when the boxes came into the room. We gathered around and opened them together. We yelled in excitement because we had receive the machines from RFB&D.

After we received the Digital Talking Books, we were very excited, yet nervous, because we didn't know how they worked. Then our teachers gave us a lesson on how to use the machines. We learned about the many features such as fast forward, play, stop, eject, and jump to a specific page. You could even place a bookmark on a specific page without asking ourselves, :Where did we leave off?"

Our Journey Begins with the Heartfelt Feelings, Thoughts and Experiences of Some Very Special Travelers.

The books on tape and CD help me relate to the character with the same problems. Also, this reading machine takes me to places I have never been. I love the books on tape and CD. To think that if these machines didn't exist, I would still have trouble understanding what I'm reading.

The reading machine helps me read books that are hard. Reading along with this machine, I forget how long I have been reading. When it is time for me to write about the story, it is easy because I remember a lot and want to write many sentences.

I really enjoy using the Digital Recorder. Listening to the story, I sometimes compare myself to the characters. Now, because of this machine, I am reading different types of books. I really enjoy this machine.

The digital recorder is special to me because it helps me understand the story I am reading. the machine is fun to work with and easy to use. It makes it fun to read, and I want to read more interesting books.

I am very excited about Digital Recorders because they help me read and understand words that I don't know. When I see those words, I see how they are spelled. I can always stop the machine and look at how I can sound them out so next time I will remember them.

I feel happy about Digital Recorders because I understand what I am reading. It helps me feel like I am part of the book.

Reading books through the Digital Recorders makes me feel like I'm watching the story on TV. What makes the digital recorder so special is that I'm also to continue reading where I left off. Now I'm no longer frustrated trying to remember where my page it.

With the Digital Recorders, I am interested in reading more books. I can relate to the character in the story. The machine is special to me because I am able to understand new and harder words and comprehend what I am reading. That is why I fell great about the Digital Recorders.

I feel fortunate to have the books on tape and CD. The machine has helped me to better understand what I am reading. It has also helped me to recognize hard-to-read words.

The Digital Recorder helps me to read faster. I am able to read more books. Also, the machines are so easy to use.

The Digital Talking Machine helps me improve my grades. It's a wonderful feeling to be able to listen and read along with the book. This machine has helped me feel more confident in understanding what I am reading.

I was happy about the books on tape and CD because I used to try reading books that I could not read. There were books like Number The Stars that was so hard for me to read on my own. Now when I read it, it is so easy with this machine.

I was so excited because The Digital Talking Books help me to explore new worlds. When I read with the Digital Talking Books, I get so into it that I feel like I am the character in the story.

I really enjoy the Learning Through Listening program. I feel very smart, and I am becoming a better reader. The Digital Recorder is special to me because now I am not only able to read, but able to understand what I'm reading. The Digital Recorder is like a teacher to me.

I feel good about the Digital Recorder because it takes me to another world. It helps me read better and find the page number. Some people think that the CD is better than the tape recorders. I don't care which one I use. I just know they help me.

The Digital Recorders make me feel special because now I am able to understand what the story is all about.

When I use the Digital Recorder, I feel excited because it helps me get better grades. I am starting to read and enjoy a lot of books. I hope to read many more books.

I feel great about the new Digital Talking Machine because it helped me improve my reading grades from a F to a C. I also feel great because it helps me read better, and I don't struggle over the hard words. I still struggle, but not that much, thanks to this wonderful machine.

I like the Digital Talking Books because you understand what you're reading better. When you are reading the books with the machines, you understand the feelings of the character. In other words, these machines are awesome!

The books on CD take me to many faraway places. I am able to use my imagination to transport myself and become the characters.

Thanks you for allowing us to take our Journey with the Learning Through listening Program. The books we read, the stories we lived, and the text we were able to understand . . . WE WILL NEVER FORGET.
