New Jersey and Record-A-Thon 2009 Perfect Together
It's still a few months away, but you've already helped us almost make our goal of raising $15,000 for Record-A-Thon 2009. Our friends at Bloomberg have already agreed to be a sponsor for the event and Apple A Day Ideas and the Lipper Family Charitable Foundation have also made sizable contributions toward the event. Volunteers have already donated $6,910 toward the goal. Of course, we are still looking for more sponsors who want to put their name on such a wonderful event. There are sponsorship packages on the table in the lounge or you can visit www.rfbdnj.org/rat.html for more information.
Our next step is one of the most important, getting together free food and Chinese auction items! If you'd like to help Michelle collect these items, please speak with her asap! We're also on the hunt for celebrity readers for the event. If you have any ideas, please see Michelle.
Remember, R-A-T is taking place April 20-26, which is right around the corner. Michelle will be holding meetings in early April to tell you all what to expect!
Stay tuned for announcements about celebrity volunteers and more special events!

Volunteer happenings
An enormous congratulations to Gwen Southgate! Her memoir, Coin Street Chronicles was published in December. If you wanted to know what it was like to have been evacuated from London and auctioned off to a country family as a child during World War II, this is a fascinating read. It's available through B&N and Amazon (don't forget to use iGive.com if you order online), or can be ordered through your favorite local bookseller. She'll also be recording her book during R-A-T. Sheldon Halpern was in Israel volunteering to update medical supplies for the Israeli army. Arleen Barisa was there at the same time. Charles Austin was in Minneapolis. Aron Davidson will be on a cruise around South America. Betty Scarlata is in Arizona, which is where Fred Horowitz was. Rick Sinding was at the inaugural. Julia Bernheim ditched the cold weather and went to Fiji. Phyllis Branin is planning to cruise the South Atlantic from the Falklands to Cape Town.
The last thing I said to John Schivell before he left for Seattle was, Well, at least you won't see any snow. A few days later, that burning in my ears was John cursing me after he arrived to witness the city's record snowfall.
Mike Tchorni is engaged and working for The Children's Law Center in The Bronx. Stephen Roman sends his regards from Chicago. Greg Paris is trying to train his dogs to help shovel snow up in Massachusetts.
Martin Rome, Ellen Arzt, Dick Roth, Toby Cowen, Martin Corwin and Tom Lear are in Florida.
Congratulations to Janet and Stuart Nagourney whose daughter recently passed the Massachusetts bar.
David Dodge
David Dodge, who had volunteered at the unit since 1999 and had been a long time generous donor, passed away on Tuesday, January 20.
We all knew David was accomplished, but had no idea just how much a part of history and the headlines he had been.
After graduation from Princeton, he became a Military Intelligence officer in World War II. After that he worked for 25 years at Aramco and the Trans-Arabian Pipeline Company (TAPLINE). For 11 of those years he was the manager of TAPLINEs Government Relations Department, negotiating contracts between the company and the governments of Lebanon, Syria and Jordan.
From 1976 to 1978 he was President of the Near East Foundation which provides technical assistance in agriculture and public health to developing countries in the Middle East and Africa and was later Chairman of the Board of that organization's successor, Middle East Relief.
David was the Vice-President for Administration (1979-83), Acting President (1981-82) and President (1996-97) of the American University of Beirut. While at AUB, David was kidnapped and held hostage for just over a year by Hezbollah terrorists in 1982-83.
He was later Recording Secretary in the Princeton University Development Office and served numerous boards. There will be a Memorial Service at the Princeton University Chapel on Saturday, January 31 at 11 a.m.
Dear Aunt Bea
A reminder: The studio is OPEN on Presidents Day February 16.The Educational Outreach Center and administrative offices will be closed.
Dear Aunt Bea,
I'm marking a book and the book has clearly been marked to page 275. My confusion is that the last thing anyone has initialed on the blue bookmarking guide is page 25. Who marked it? Should the mystery marker have initialed the blue bookmarking sheet?
Confused in Calculus
Dear Confused,
Yes indeed the mystery marker should have initialed the blue bookmarking sheet.
Dear Aunt Hurrrruh Bea,
I uh, hurrrruh, need to clear my throat. It's cough, cough OK to keep the recording going, right?
Hackin' Eddie
Dear Eddie,
Didn't you man the grill at the White Rose System in Highland Park about 30 years ago, or is that another Hackin' Eddie. By all means...STOP...just like you misread something. If you thought listening to Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" was a trip on headphones, try listening to someone clearing their throat or coughing. It's just not nearly as pleasant.
Welcome to the Board!
We welcome two RFB&D dads to the New Jersey Unit board of directors. Mark J. Kavulich of Shamong has pledged to help spread awareness about the unit's work in South Jersey. He has backgrounds in sales and art and has illustrated a children's book called Stitch's Story.
Mark is married to Dr. Christine A. Papa, a dermatologist and surgeon, and has four children, three of whom attend The Cambridge School in Pennington for language-based learning differences.
We also welcome Mark S. Sherman of Kendall Park to the board. He is Senior Vice President-Wealth Management for Smith Barney in New Brunswick and has been an RFB&D advocate and worked with the Educational Outreach Center.
