Governor Whitman Leads Local Record-A-Thon Effort
New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman to serve as RFB&D New Jersey Unit Record-A-Thon Honorary Chair
Princeton, New Jersey, March 24, 2000
Governor Christine Todd Whitman will serve as Honorary Chair of the New Jersey Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic's (RFB&D) Record-A-Thon 2000. The event, the local unit's sixth annual, will be held in the Princeton and West Windsor studios of RFB&D from April 10 15, 2000.
Event Will Increase Awareness, Production, and Funding
Record-A-Thon (R-A-T) 2000 is the non-profit organization's annual concerted effort to increase community and corporate awareness of print disabilities. RFB&D and its core of volunteers serve students and professionals who cannot read standard print by translating printed educational materials into talking books. During the mid-April event, volunteers will increase their usual donations of time and talent in the reading and preparation of audio tapes. Their extra efforts will help RFB&D prepare for the large demand for books at the beginning of the upcoming academic year.
The Record-A-Thon is also an opportunity for RFB&D to increase its visibility to corporate and individual donors, whose monetary support make up the bulk of the operating budget for the local unit. More than 80 percent of the money donated to RFB&D goes directly into educational support services, or production and distribution of audio tapes for its member borrowers.
The New Jersey Unit is one of the leading producers of recorded text in the national organization. In the past year, nearly 500 New Jersey volunteers recorded more than 8,000 hours of academic text for elementary to graduate level students. The national library, headquartered in Princeton, holds more than 80,000 volumes recorded by volunteers in over 30 recording studios across the country.
By serving as Honorary Chair for the upcoming Record-A-Thon, Governor Whitman is expanding her support of the organization. Over the past several years the governor has chosen to give her time and talent as an RFB&D volunteer reader. This has been her way of encouraging volunteerism in the state. "RFB&D's audio tapes help bring the magic of the printed page to those who have lost their sight or who struggle with dyslexia...I will dedicate a few hours every month to help others by reading for Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic," the governor vowed in her 1998 State of the State address.
