Profiles of RFB&D NJ Unit Board of Directors
Fred Horowitz, Chair
An engineering graduate of Stevens Institute of Technology, Fred Horowitz retired in 2001 after a 34+ year career at ExxonMobil where he held a variety of management positions. His career involved extensive worldwide travel, including foreign residency in South America, Asia and the UK. In retirement, he has nurtured his interests in athletics (tennis, biking, hiking) and travel; is spending quality time with five grandchildren; and has become more active in the Stevens Alumni Association, most recently serving on their Executive Board. An avid reader, with a strong interest in learning, he became an RFB&D volunteer in 2003, and currently reads math and science textbooks for grade school and college. He is very supportive of RFB&Ds mission and, in joining the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006, he hopes to contribute further by helping broaden its reach beyond the Princeton area and seeking additional opportunities for corporate sponsorship of volunteerism.
Tom Brown, Secretary and Development Committee
Tom has been actively involved in oil trading for the past 20 years. He is currently the Managing Director of Lukoil Pan Americas. He is very active in athletics, both individually and as a youth coach. As one of the original founding families, his family is active in St David the King Catholic Church in West Windsor. They also enjoy spending every summer together at their beach house in Stone Harbor NJ. He and his wife Joan Brown have two children Jonathan and Kathryn in their teens and Kevin who will be there soon. Their daughter Kathryn is dyslexic and a long time user of RFB&D. These books on CD have been most instrumental in developing her love of literature. He is thrilled to have the chance to be involved in RFB&D and looks forward working with us. Tom joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2005.
David Grant, Treasurer and Finance Chair
Dave Grant joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2004 and serves on the Finance Committee. He is legally blind, but corrected, so he knows how tough life would be without sight and wants to help those so disadvantaged. His consulting firm, Grant Associates, helps organizations find leadership staff so he will be very helpful in finding a new Executive Director for RFB&D. Dave also serves on the board and Finance Committee of the Princeton Landing development next door to RFB&D. He was also CEO of Abu Garcia, Kalmaier Intl. and Penn Tennis. Other boards include Queenship of Mary Church.
Edward Barry, Development Chair
Mr. Barry retired after 42 years with Mobil Technology Corporation as a Senior Scientist. He has been a volunteer at RFB&D for 10 years. He chairs the Kiwanis Club Sponsored Youth Committee involving Gloucester County teenagers in volunteer activities. He also received the Kiwanis International special recognition for this effort. He is currently involved with the World Affairs Council, conducted major fund raising for a local hospital, and assists in coordination of academic/industrial involvement in advanced combustion research project at Villanova University. On behalf of a local church, he managed construction of their multimillion-dollar Parish Center building, chairs the Finance Committee and is a Trustee. Ed joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006.
Winston Kirton, Governance
Winston S. Kirton is a local attorney in private practice specializing in business and regulatory compliance. Winston graduated from Niagara University with a B.S. in biology and earned his law degree at Seton Hall University School of Law. He has volunteered with RFB&D recording legal texts and was inspired to serve in a greater capacity after observing the great works performed by RFB&D and its volunteers on behalf of the reading and learning challenged. As a former educator in the NYC public school system, Winston has an appreciation of the value of education in the lives of students regardless of their circumstances. He is married with three children and a dog and enjoys spending quality time with his family. Winston believes that service is the key to finding one's true purpose in life. Winston joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006.
Debra Faigen, Development
Having joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2004, Debbie Faigen has also volunteered at the NJ studio for several years. She wanted to become more involved in this fabulous organization by joining the board. She serves on the Development Committee.
Richard Flamini
Richard Flamini joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007 and is currently the Director of Special Services in Spotswood. He served in that same capacity in South Plainfield for 19 years where he had been an Assistant Director, child study team member and social worker as well. He also served on the Rahway Board of Education. He holds a Bachelor's degree in secondary education, Master's degree and post-Master's from Kean University in Student Personnel Services. He studied special education in a doctoral program at Rutgers and Arcadia Universities. Richard was President of the NJ Association of Pupil Services Administrators and currently serves on their executive board. He also served on the Rutgers School of Medicine and Dentistry Advisory Board on Children of Divorce, the Middle Atlantic States Evaluation Committee on Special Education. Richard is certified as a Principal/Supervisor, Teacher of the Handicapped, Secondary Teacher, and Director of Pupil Personnel Services.
Jerome K. Freedman, M.D., Development
Jerry Freedman is a retired Ophthalmologist who has been on the board for seven years on both the Governance and Development Committees. He strongly believes in the function and value of RFB&D. He is also affiliated with the Old Guard of Princeton, Republican Township Committee, American Jewish Committee, and the Pond View Homeowner's Association Board. Jerry joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 1999.
Bruce Gilbertson, Development
Bruce Gilbertson is currently a Vice President of Administration (finance) with the Educational Testing Service (ETS) in Princeton, N.J., where he has also held senior positions in operations and customer service. ETS is the world's largest private educational measurement firm and a leader in educational research. Prior to joining ETS, Bruce has held senior leadership positions in several firms including AT&T. Bruce is the first college graduate in his family and credits education as making a difference in his life. He believes in volunteering as a way of giving something back to others who helped him along the way. He also has a family member who is mentally challenged and receives the daily benefit of volunteers from all walks of life. Bruce, a Fellow of the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, is also a Certified Public Accountant and holds an MBA from Lehigh University. He has served on other nonprofit boards, AICPA and NJSCPA committees, the Holmdel Township Committee, Holmdel Youth Athletic Association and St. Catherine's Church. Bruce joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006.
Herbert M. Greenberg, Ph.D., Development
Herb Greenberg is president and CEO of Caliper, a company that he founded 40 years ago. It assesses the management, sales and service potential of individuals and companies throughout the world. He also owned a radio station WIMG in Trenton and owns the Trenton Shooting Stars basketball team. He co-hosts a weekly show called "Winning in Business." RFB&D was a "huge help to me as I grew up and I want to give something back." Mr. Greenberg joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2002.
Madolyn Nagley Greve, Development
A Princeton resident, Ms. Greve has been a real estate agent in the Greater Princeton Area for the last 18 years, currently with Gloria Nilson/GMAC Real Estate. She graduated from Adrian College in Michigan and grew up there in Birmingham. Her twin boys are sophomores - Charles, at Princeton High School and Steven, at The Gow School in South Wales, N.Y., a school for those who have the learning differences like Dyslexia. The school utilizes The Orten Gilliam method of teaching that has been highly effect in teaching her son Steven to read. Steven is a member of RFB&D and utilizes the recorded books to complete his assignments. Ms. Greve first introduction to RFB&D came from the learning consultant that evaluated her son Steven with Dyslexia. Her involvement with RFB&D came when Deborah Brittain (a fellow Junior League Member and RFB&D volunteer) ask her to help with the state RFB&D annual fundraiser. Ms. Greve also served on the selection committee for the 2004 Marion Huber Learning Through Listing Awards.
Ms. Greve is an active volunteer in the community serving on the Princeton Medical Center June Fete and with the Junior League of Greater Princeton as it's President and as President their State Council where she established the first statewide volunteer program among the 7 NJ Leagues. She received the Junior Leagues prestigious Presidents Bowl Award and outstanding Sustainer Award. In addition, she has served the State of NJ Office of Volunteerism, NJ State Museum, Friends of the Charter School of Princeton, Princeton High School PTO, and the Nassau Presbyterian Church. Ms. Greve joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006.
Keith Latimer
Keith Latimer is a seasoned professional, with over 10 years experience building, protecting and managing wealth. As a financial advisor, he is known for his subject matter expertise, ability to harness leadership and the capacity to achieve economic power and leverage. A Wealth Manager at Merrill Lynch, Keith has a personal passion for economic empowerment of his clients. He is a proven leader committed to improving the quality of financial lives and is enthusiastic by the achievement of creating opportunities and overcoming obstacles. In addition to his wealth management duties, Keith is a popular speaker at conference and organizational meetings. He recently addressed the NBA Players Wives Association. His clients include public and private sectors non-profits and Fortune 500 companies. His client based has spanned the financial, technical, entertainment and healthcare fields. Keith holds a Business degree from Longwood College, in Virginia and has securities licenses: series 6, 7, 63, and 65. He also holds a license in life and health insurance. His work will be featured in Black Enterprise with a tentative release date of September 2007. He is devoted to his active involvement as a youth role model and mentor. Born in New York and raised in Virginia, Keith resides in Milltown, NJ. Keith joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007.
Joseph Maida, Finance
Mr. Maida is President and COO of the regional accounting firm of Nicholas C. Maida. He practices primarily in financial statement assurance services, closely held business tax planning and compliance, management information systems and personal financial planning. He is also past president of the Child Care Connection, Inc., a nonprofit agency designed to promote quality child and dependent adult care services through parent information, resource development and provider training. He has served as financial specialist for the Delaware Valley United Way allocations committee where he reviewed funding for child care organizations. He is a member of the Mercer County Estate Planning Council. He is also treasurer of the Princeton Horizon condominium Association and the former treasurer of The Columbia University Club of New York. Joe joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2006.
Mari Molenaar, Ed.D., Governance Chair
Mari Molenaar spent 25 years as a statistician with the NJ Office of Special Education Programs, now retired. In her capacity as Acting Director of Special Services in Dunellen Public Schools, she enrolled the district as an RFB&D member, bringing recorded books to a second-grade student with blindness and many other students with learning disabilities. On the Governance Committee, Mari conducts the surveys of volunteers, staff and board members. She and her husband Warren Fioretti also played piano and sax at two of the past Volunteer Appreciation events! They also have two sons who have disabilities. Mari joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 1999.
Janet Nagourney, Development
Janet Nagourney has more than twenty years of experience of public accounting experience. She has a particular interest in not-for-profit organizations and has served on the not-for-profit committee of the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants. Janet graduated from Brooklyn College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music in 1976 and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting in 1982. Janet worked for several small accounting firms prior to joining Weiser LLP, located in Edison, New Jersey. She has served on the Board of Trustees of Beth El Synagogue and several local arts organizations. She is currently a member of the Hightstown-East Windsor Lions Club. Janet lives with her husband Stuart in East Windsor, New Jersey. In her free time she conducts the Beth El Synagogue Temple choir and sings with other local choral organizations. Janet also enjoys traveling and photographing the locations she visits. Janet joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2005.
James D. Peters
Jim Peters and his wife Deborah founded Cambridge School in 2001. Cambridge School is a unique independent, nurturing, day school for children who have been diagnosed with primary language-based learning differences, including but not limited to Dyslexia. It has an enrollment of over 125 students in grades K through 8. Jim has over thirty years business experience, including Chief Executive Officer of Utrecht Art Supplies (Cranbury, NJ), President of E. & B. Marine (Edison, NJ) and Executive Vice-president of Sportmart (Chicago, IL). He has an undergraduate degree in Marketing from Northeastern University (Boston) and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Suffolk University (Boston). He and his wife have two children: Courtney is an attorney and lives with her husband in Boston: JD is a freshman at Boston College. Originally from Boston, they have a second home in Chatham, Massachusetts (on Cape Cod), where they try to spend much of their free time. Jim joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007.
Gary Plescia
Dr. Gary Plescia has over 25 years experience in the IT industry ranging from programmer through Systems Programming and management. He has developed and managed the current hotline support tracking system for foreign exchange problems and issues. He has experience in a wide range of industries including manufacturing, education, health care, county government and foreign exchange banking. He managed an international team of approx 30 users and IT staff for the Y2K remediation. Dr. Plescia's advanced degree in psychology has helped him in managing both projects and staff. He also runs his own business that has developed an IEP writing and tracking software bought by ten percent of the school districts in New Jersey. Gary joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007.
Joseph W. Plotnick
Joe had a career at Dun & Bradstreet spending over 30 years in positions of increasing responsibility reaching the level of Vice President. He was also a Sr. Vice President at Claritas Inc, a leader in consumer and business marketing data. Joe is also very active in his synagogue having held various board positions and currently on the Rabbi search committee. He's also an avid musician currently playing drums with his synagogue band called "Sons Of Tikvah." Joe joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007.
Christopher Tarr
Chris Tarr is an attorney, having practiced in Princeton for almost 35 years. Chris's mother was a checker for the Princeton Chapter of RFBD and his daughter is a client, receiving some of her college texts from RFBD. Chris and his wife, Susan, live in Princeton, where daughter and Jen and son Mike live when not away at school. He has been involved in a leadership capacity with many Princeton-area non-profit groups, including the Princeton Bar Association, Princeton Regional Chamber of Commerce, Greater Mercer Transportation Management Association, Newgrange School, Eden Institute, Princeton Soccer Association, Director, American Red Cross, Princeton Chapter, and the Greater Princeton Jaycees. Chris joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 2007.
James D. Walker, Secretary
JD Walker contributes his private sector skills to assist the reading impaired. As past vice chair and treasurer, he is dedicated to providing the recorded books to help people to help themselves pursue their education. JD is currently with Vatamerica and also worked as tax staff and partner with Ernst & Young as well as an auditor with the U.S. government. JD joined the RFB&D-NJ Unit board in 1999.
