CELEBRATE NEW JERSEY VOLUNTEERS

SUPPORT RECORD-A-THON 2009

Since 1958, volunteers have come from across the Garden State to record educational material for people who cannot effectively read them because they are blind, visually impaired or dyslexic.

This year's Record-A-Thon (R-A-T) celebrates New Jersey and the volunteer spirit of its residents.

As always, the purpose of R-A-T is threefold:
• Increase the number of books our volunteers record in anticipation of student needs for the fall semester as well as
add books to our national library of over 43,000 titles
• Increase awareness of RFB&D's services by spreading the word about our library of accessible texts and our educational outreach programs.
• Increase financial support to ensure the continuation of RFB&D's efforts. Thanks to our sponsors we are already well on our way to meeting the goal of raising $15,000 toward the unit's recording and educational outreach programs. If you would like to add yourself or your company or organization to our generous sponsors, visit www.rfbdnj.org/rat.html.

Record-A-Thon 2009 also marks the tenth anniversary of the unit's Educational Outreach Center which has grown to assist teachers and students in more than 500 New Jersey schools. It has worked with the schools and the unit's recording studio to get the right book to the right student at the right time.

The unit will also host a Community Open House on Wednesday, April 22 at 1 and 7:30 p.m.

We hope that you will be part of Record-A-Thon and help us continue to achieve our vision for all people to have equal access to the printed word.

For more information, please contact Michelle Ioselevich at 609-651-8575 or mioselevich@rfbd.org.

Behind the Scenes as Trenton Gets a "Classroom Close-up"

The basement of Franklin Elementary School in Trenton is home to its resource room, library and cafeteria. You can't help but notice that everything, from the posters on the walls to the Winnie the Pooh reading corner in the cafeteria, is geared toward encouraging reading.

This is where "Classroom Close-up NJ," a co-production of the New Jersey Education Association and NJN Public Television, decided to document the successful collaboration between the school and RFB&D's Educational Outreach Center. The crew recorded the work of resource room teachers Peggy Kennedy and Cathy Little and fifth grade teacher Kathy Graham and their students with print disabilities such as dyslexia. It also shined a spotlight on the efforts of New Jersey Unit State Regional Coordinator Paula Roberts-Hansel to make sure the teachers and students have the equipment and books they need.

Segment producer Kate Megargee didn't have to prime the pump to get the teachers and principal MarcMaurice to discuss the positive effect RFB&D's Learning Through Listening program is having on Franklin students.

The resource room students had been reading several grades below level, but now, as Little put it, "The kids are now saying 'I get this!'" Kennedy points out that for the first time these students are able to complete book reports.

According to Maurice, 'Getting a book is no longer a punishment" for these students. He added, "It helps our kids get rid of the phobia of being afraid of reading." Kennedy notes that the students now want to bring books home and share their new skill with their parents.

In Graham's class the students using the audio texts are side by side with the students without print disabilities. She notes, "There's no stigma at all. They're part of the group and getting the same content."

And all rave about the support provided by Roberts-Hansel. At first the teachers were afraid to ask for too much, but as Kennedy put it, “Everything has been given to us so quickly,” that they have increased their requests.

The teachers are making sure that other teachers in Trenton know that RFB&D is available for students who need it. They are also making sure that their current students have the service added to their IEPs so the audiobooks follow them throughout their career.

The "Classroom Close-up" aired in February and can be accessed from the unit's Web site: www.rfbdnj.org.

The New Jersey Unit thanks Principal Marc Maurice and the teachers and students of Franklin Elementary for allowing NJN to document their achievements. It would also like to thank “Classroom Closeup NJ” producer Wanda Swanson for recognizing the importance of this story.

The Unit Assists NJ Colleges With Assistive Technology

What happens to New Jersey students with dyslexia or a visual impairment once they graduate from high school? The students no longer have Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) to make sure they receive the assistance they need to succeed. That's where the Adaptive Technology Center for New Jersey Colleges at the College of New Jersey can help.

The Adaptive Technology Center disseminates information on assistive technology, operates an adaptive technology lending program for students with disabilities and New Jersey colleges and universities, and provides training to faculty and staff at those institutions.

New Jersey Unit Educational Outreach Center Director Chris Ranaghan reached out to Dr. Amy Dell, the Director of the Adaptive Technology Center to find out how the unit could better serve the state's colleges and universities. Ranaghan admits that at first, "Dr. Dell was very skeptical about us. She knew about us, but didn't think we would be able to supply the audiobooks and equipment needed."

But soon Dell was impressed by the level of commitment the Educational Outreach Center staff had to work with the Adaptive Technology Center. Dell is "recommending RFB&D to schools and students based on that commitment."

Dell and the Technology Center's lending project coordinator, Tammy Cordwell, came to the unit to see how volunteers were creating the audiobooks they needed, including Dell's own Assistive Technology in the Classroom: Enhancing the School Experiences of Students with Disabilities, written with Deborah Newton and Jerry Petroff.

Assistance from the Adaptive Technology Center is crucial for individuals transitioning from high school to college because the students are expected to take more responsibility. They must seek assistance themselves and according to Cordwell, many "don't self-identify until they start to fail."

For more information about the Adaptive Technology Center, visit http://adaptivetech.tcnj.edu.

Welcome to the Board

The New Jersey Unit recently welcomed three new members to its Board of Directors.

Mark S. Sherman of Kendall Park and Andrew Kavulich of Shamong are RFB&D dads. Sherman is Senior Vice President-Wealth Management for Smith Barney in New Brunswick and has been an RFB&D advocate and worked with the Educational Outreach Center. Kavulich has pledged to help spread awareness about the unit's work in South Jersey. He has backgrounds in sales and art and has illustrated a children's book called Stitch's Story.

Mary K. Brown of Princeton has spent time in the studio recording Economics texts. She brings vast marketing and communications experience in both traditional and new media, most recently with Schering-Plough Research Institute, as well as a background in elementary education.

Princeton? Duke? Georgetown?
Only Good Choices Thanks to RFB&D

SaraBeth Clark has a choice to make. The senior at Blair Academy has to decide whether she wants to attend Georgetown, Duke or Princeton on a rowing scholarship this fall. It's a decision she can't imagine having to make without the efforts of RFB&D volunteers.

SaraBeth is quick to explain that athletic scholarships now require more academic achievement than many think. She had to prove through transcripts and test scores that she is academically qualified to attend those schools and believes her "grades would not be where they are' without RFB&D.

Before being diagnosed with dyslexia, SaraBeth could rarely get through a reading assignment. She would have her mother read to her or "trade cheese fries" for classmates' notes. Now she reads along with a recording or learns through listening while on her indoor rowing trainer called an ergometer.

She has seen a change in people's attitude toward audio books since she began using RFB&D's audio textbooks in middle school. What used to be viewed as "weird" by her classmates is now accepted. Several of those classmates are now RFB&D members themselves and others who aren't dyslexic pay to download commercial recordings of their literature assignments.

Since SaraBeth plans on majoring in biomedical engineering, she knows much of the material she needs will never be recorded commercially and is "so grateful for the generosity of volunteers taking the time" to give their talents to help others.

One of those SaraBeth finds so "unselfish" is her aunt. Inspired by the impact RFB&D has had on her niece, Kate Terrell has volunteered at the New Jersey Unit since 2003.

RFB&D Volunteer Gwen Southgate Brings Coin Street Home For RFB&D Members

A young girl and her brothers and sisters are up on a stage. They hope the family they are "auctioned" to is kind. This is not the story of pre-Civil War Louisiana; it's the story of New Jersey Unit volunteer Gwen Southgate's youth in England during World War II.

Her memoir of that time, Coin Street Chronicles: London's Vanished Old South Bank Area, has recently been published. She began thinking about writing it when she realized her children knew nothing about her childhood. She says, "from there it took a life of its own."

Gwen emigrated to the U.S. and taught Physics, Chemistry and "miscellaneous science" for 21 years at Highland Park High School. When she retired she wanted to do something to help people who are visually impaired because her mother was legally blind for the last five years of her life and enjoyed hearing her local newspaper recorded for her in England. Gwen looked around and found RFB&D in 1992. She has been recording physics, electronics and math books ever since.

She hopes her book gives the reader, "a picture of a place and time that's different from what they know. "That time included being evacuated from London during the bombings to the homes of total strangers in the country. RFB&D members will be able to share that picture after Gwen records Coin Street Chronicles during April's Record-A-Thon.

Charitable Giving is Even More Important During an Economic Downturn
Creative Ways to Give to Support RFB&D

For some, charitable giving might seem like the easiest (and first) expense to eliminate during an economic downturn. But giving is even more important this year. Donors have requested information on ways to support us during challenging economic times.

Here are a few ways to give now:

1) Consider a donation of stock that has gained in value. You avoid taxes on your capital gains, and you get to deduct the full market value of your donation. Do not donate securities that have declined in value, because you give up the tax benefits of selling them at a loss. A better strategy is to sell your declined value securities and donate the proceeds to charity.

2) If you are 701/2 or older, consider making charitable contributions directly from your individual retirement account. This tax break, which Congress recently extended through 2009, allows seniors to take tax-free withdrawals from their IRAs, as long as the money goes directly to a qualified charity. The contributions aren't deductible, but the money wont be included in your taxable income for the year. This could be particularly useful for retirees who have paid off their mortgages and don't have enough deductions to itemize. Giving away money that would otherwise be taxed is kind of a back door way to get a deduction.

3) Make honor or memorial gifts – Instead of purchasing gifts or sending flowers for a special occasion – consider making a charitable donation to RFB&D to mark the special occasion – birthdays, anniversaries, births, memorials.

4) Set your unwanted jewelry free and transform it into cash – Submit your dusty jewelry to Red Swan and the proceeds are donated in your name directly to RFB&D. See the Red Swan article featured in this newsletter for more details.

5) Work Your Network – Don't be shy. Spread the word about your interest in supporting RFB&D. You will be surprised at how many people will want to help out. Sign up to be a Table Host for this Fall’s RFB&D Learning Through Listening Breakfast. Invite up to 10 of your friends, family members or associates to join you for complimentary breakfast while listening to RFB&D success stories. Details about this event will follow shortly.

There has never been a more important time to support RFB&D. Contact the development office at 609-651-8574 for information on these and other ways to support RFB&D.

Learning Through Listening® Plus Community Support Equals Honors for a Perth Amboy School

Edward J. Patten Elementary School in Perth Amboy is one of two New Jersey schools named Title I Distinguished Schools for the 2007 school year, based on its students' academic achievement and other factors. A part of Patten's success could be its embrace of RFB&D's Learning Through Listening program for its students with print disabilities.

Stacey Muschette is the Regional Provider who works with the Perth Amboy School District. She reports that every school in the district uses RFB&D's audio textbooks as a first choice for its students with print disabilities, even when more expensive commercial accommodations are available. The teachers and students find the RFB&D's recordings more versatile and easier to use than other methods of making printed text accessible.

Almost 90 percent of the district's students are Hispanic and many come from homes where English is not the first language. According to Muschette, for many of the younger students with print disabilities, RFB&D's audio texts are among the child's first exposure to English.

New Jersey Unit volunteers have recorded more than 70 texts needed by the district during the past year. Part of that recording was underwritten by a grant from Magyar Bank for educational programs for Middlesex or Somerset County residents.

Some schools want famous athletes and politicians to come to their schools for Read Across America.
