From the New Jersey Unit Executive Director
Dear Friends of the New Jersey Unit,
As the New Jersey Unit of Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic® enters its 50th year of providing services, it continues to stay mission-focused, promoting not only our services, but also creating effective partnerships with individuals like you. We take pride in the fact that we work so hard to maintain these associations. I have learned that preserving relationships with our community is an incremental process and, like a slow-moving glacier, the power to transform is incredible.
This is an important milestone in the New Jersey Units history. We look back at what we have accomplished while looking ahead to our future. As we move into 2008 and beyond, the New Jersey Unit is following a new strategic plan for continued member support, unparalleled success in the production studio and the advancement of our fund development programming.
The fact that our efforts work so well is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers and the leadership of the professional staff. We could not achieve the levels of success that we are known for without the attentive work of our volunteers, the intense involvement of our members, the loyal support of our donors, and the
daily efforts of our staff.
We pause now to remember those who founded the New Jersey Unit and are no longer with us. We continue on the path they laid before us as we work to exceed our goals, reengage our benefactors and develop new philanthropic partnerships. I am asking for your continued commitment to the New Jersey Unit and its important mission. If you have any questions or suggestions, or would like to discuss opportunities on how you can be involved in our exciting future, I invite you to contact me directly at 609-750-9614 or e-mail me at scampbell@rfbd.org.

Celebrating Service to Our Mission
at the Volunteer Recognition Luncheon
The New Jersey Unit celebrated the contributions of its volunteers during a Volunteer Recognition Luncheon on September 27, 2007 at Queenship of Mary Catholic Church in Plainsboro. Volunteers of the Year for the recording studio, Educational Outreach Center and development were honored as well as those who donated more than 100 hours of time and talent or have volunteered for 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25 years or more. Top row: Executive Director Stephanie Campbell with development honoree Mana Bhatt and Board Chair Fred Horowitz; Studio honoree Jean Gunkel; Studio honorees Phyllis Branin and Dot Messineo. Bottom row: RFB&D National Headquarters Member Services Administrator Barbara Zustovich, who told volunteers about RFB&Ds renewed commitment to military veterans, with Educational Outreach Director Chris Ranaghan; Studio honoree Karen Frezza; Newcomer of the Year Bob Kolker; Educational Outreach Center honoree Susan Kaplan.
The New Jersey Unit Welcomes New Staff Members
We are very excited to welcome seven talented new staff members to the New Jersey Unit, said Stephanie Campbell, Executive Director.
The New Jersey Unit studio announced the promotion of Michelle Ioselevich from Assistant Production Director to her new role as Production Director. Michelle was promoted when former Production Director Jessie Falcone left to accept the position of Production Training and Support Project Manager with RFB&D National Headquarters. Jessie guided the studio through many transitions and helped
boost production to its current record levels.
Lauren Markley and Jeff Kaplan also joined the studio staff as Assistant Production Directors. In their roles, they will be providing expertise and leadership to the production process.
The Educational Outreach team welcomed Stacey Muschette and Paula Roberts-Hansel. Stacey and Paula will work in the schools as State Regional Providers. Celia Rechtman will serve as Member Services Coordinator and Sherry Deutsch returns to the New Jersey Unit as Project Membership Coordinator.
The units f inancial development effort is now lead by new Director of Development Grace P. Alparone. Grace will build sustainable funding for the unit through donor centered philanthropic programming.
Lending support as the New Jersey Unit Administrator and Development Assistant is Gretchen Orr. Gretchen will be responsible for administrative matters and will provide support for fund development with special emphasis on corporate and foundation relations.

How the New Jersey Unit Creates AudioPlus® Textbooks
 |
1. Based on local and national needs and research, books are assigned to the studio by RFB&D national headquar ters for recording. |
 |
2. After the textbook is delivered to the Production Director, it is analyzed. (RFB&Ds reading conventions are applied to the book, bookmarking plans and directions to the reader are created. Also, the book is outlined for computer entry into TOC Tool for recording and navigation.) |
 |
3. TOC Tooling software is used to organize the book on the computer by chapter, section, etc. to ready the book files on the computer for recording. |
 |
4. Two copies of the textbook are marked per the bookmarking plan so both the reader and director have identical instructions. |
 |
5. The textbook is now ready to be assigned to be read. The level and subject matter of the book and the tested skill of the volunteers determine who will work with a par ticular book. |
 |
6. The textbook is read in sessions lasting 11/2 hours each by a trained volunteer Reader while a volunteer Director runs the recording equipment, offers direction and monitors for errors. Books that are all text and not technical can be finished fairly quickly. Books with many graphs and drawings or that are highly technical can take up to a year to complete. |
 |
7. During production, staff members or volunteers spot-check the recorded files to ensure quality control. If errors have occurred, staff or experienced volunteers make corrections edit, or reread sections if necessary. |
 |
8. Each week, completed sections of the books are sent to headquarters for formatting and mailed to members as Free Matter for the Blind & Handicapped. If a book is small, the student will likely receive the book in one shipment. Larger books are sent out in installments so members do not have to wait the many months it sometimes takes to record lengthier books. |
How Paul Stankard Learned The Art of Learning
While writing his book No Green Berries or Leaves: The Creative Journey of an Artist in Glass (McDonald & Woodward), world-renowned glass artist Paul Stankard was invited to give a commencement address to Master of Fine Arts graduates at Ohios Muskingum College. He decided to not talk about his art, but about his struggles growing up with dyslexia in a time before it was understood.
Much to his surprise, the graduates were rapt by his speech and gave him a standing ovation. Stankard knew he had to rewrite the f irst chapter to reflect on that part of his journey.
|
Paul Stankards No Green Berries or Leaves is available through all book retailers. To learn more and see his glass art, visit www.paulstankard.com.
|
While touring the New Jersey Unit, Paul Stankard learned how the AudioPlus® disks he receives are recorded.
|
Stankards dyslexia wasnt diagnosed until he was an adult. He says that up until then he had to be creative to learn how to persevere. He believes, When youre dyslexic you put out much more energy just to maintain a basic level.
That creativity has inspired his flame-worked floral motifs expressed in crystal paperweights, rectangular columns and orbs that have led him to be described as the greatest of the worlds glass artists. His work has won many awards, been seen in exhibitions all over the world and featured on HGTVs Modern Masters and Martha Stewarts Living.
It was as an adult at his mothers breakfast table in the late 1960s that Stankard f irst heard the term dyslexia. He was struggling to read a newspaper and his sister, who was studying special education in college, recognized symptoms in Stankard. That moment and others liberated him and he began to, as he puts it, learn how to learn.
One of the ways Stankard has learned to learn is by listening to RFB&D audiobooks. Along with his successful career in glassmaking, he now teaches at Salem County Community College in Penns Grove. He says, By RFB&D helping to educate me, Ive been able to educate people.
|
| Stankard wants to give back by serving as an RFB&D ambassador in community colleges where he sees himself in a lot of his students. These kids are sharp, but they cant prove it by traditional means, he says. They have internalized low self-esteem. They have to experience success. He sees educators and others, like RFB&D volunteers, who help provide educations as holy people, because they empower people to be the best they can be.
Stankards inspiring book, No Green Berries or Leaves has been recorded at the New Jersey Unit and is available to RFB&D members.

Thanks to RFB&D, Phyllis Volker Continues to Share Her Favorite Things
A lot of people didnt know how Phyllis Volker would continue her career as a middle school English teacher after she lost her sight to diabetic retinography at the age of 27. With the help of others, including RFB&D, she has been able to continue to teach at Iselin Middle School in Woodbridge, complete her masters degree, become department chair and Middlesex County Teacher of the Year in 2005.
Volker has been an RFB&D member for 33 years and says she was able to get all of the reading materials to get my masters. She also uses RFB&D for classroom materials and to keep up with what my students and the world at large are reading.
After she lost her sight, Volker took a f ive-month hiatus and attended the New Jersey Commission for the Blinds rehabilitation center to learn braille and mobility skills. For the past 14 years, a teachers aide has assisted her in the classroom and she has also had the help of a Seeing Eye dog.
Recently, New Jersey Unit volunteers recorded the teachers edition of a text added at Volkers school. NJ Unit Production Director Michelle Ioselevich called Volker to determine the best way to record the volumes of additional margin information published in the teachers edition. Ioselevich learned that Volker takes full advantage of the improved navigation and bookmarking tools available with RFB&Ds AudioPlus® disks. She says the navigation expanded her abilities and gives her much more freedom to f ind what I need. Now I go directly to the beginning of a sentence if I want.
Volker will speak at the units 50th Anniversary Gala about her experience with RFB&Ds recordings. She says, Reading remains one of my favorite things in the world because of RFB&D.
Helping Martha Higginbotham and Her Students Go Above and Beyond
Shell do anything to help her students, says Educational Outreach State Regional Provider Paula Roberts-Hansel. Thats why she enjoys working with Martha Higginbotham, a teacher at Trentons Monument Elementary School.
One of the things Higginbotham does as an advocate for her students is making sure that students with learning differences have access to RFB&Ds audiobooks. She has seen f irst hand the difference they have made for many of her students and is excited to speak at the New Jersey Units 50th Anniversary Gala and share stories of the lives RFB&D has touched.
Educational Outreach Director Chris Ranaghan says shes, so happy that Martha is going to speak at the gala and let guests know what a difference their work makes. And in Martha theyll see how dedicated the teachers we work with are.
Roberts-Hansel adds, Martha always goes above and beyond what is expected. That means Martha Higginbotham has a lot in common with the volunteers and supporters shell be addressing. They all go above and beyond what is expected, so that RFB&D members can exceed the expectations many have had for them.

Help Yourself & the New Jersey Unit Through a Life Income Gift
How do I establish a life income gift?
Family obligations and the need to provide for retirement, coupled with the high cost of living, make it diff icult for many people to consider substantial charitable gifts now. But there is a way to have the satisfaction of making a meaningful lifetime gift without sacrif ice. In fact, through what is called a life income gift, you can get current income tax and f inancial benef its. You irrevocably transfer some assets to the New Jersey Unit of RFB&D now, and in return, you (and a survivor, if you wish) receive income for life. As a result, the assets are used to carry out the New Jersey Units mission.
By making a life income gift to the New Jersey Unit of RFB&D, you may receive the following benef its, in addition to the pleasure of knowing the good work your gift will do. The benef its may include:
- An immediate income tax deduction.
- Income can be taxed more favorably in some plans.
- Your probate and estate administration costs may be reduced.
What are examples of life income plans?
Charitable Gift Annuity
In exchange for your gift of cash or marketable securities to the New Jersey Unit of RFB&D, we agree to pay you (and a survivor or other benef iciary) a f ixed amount annually for your lifetime. The transfer is part gift and part purchase of an annuity. The rate of return is attractive and the payments are guaranteed for life.
The New Jersey Unit of RFB&D uses the charitable gift annuity rates recommended by the American Council on Gift Annuities. The following are rates for a single-life charitable gift annuity:
