2006 Annual Report

2006 Highlights

The unit completed a year long study with Rutgers University to test the effectiveness of RFB&D’s Learning Through Listening® program. The results concluded that we are making a significant difference by helping raise students’ grades and test scores and improving their self-esteem in the classroom.

Our Educational Outreach team once again finished the year ranking number one nationally among RFB&D units in renewing institutional and individual members. Additionally, the department ranked second nationally in recruiting new schools into the program.

New Jersey memberships have grown to 405 school and 1,273 individual memberships.

The New Jersey studio achieved an unprecedented 9,314 recording hours, not only surpassing their annual goal, but also setting a new national record. More than 400 audio textbooks were recorded by the New Jersey studio.

With new leadership in Development, the department sought and successfully secured new funding and renewed relationships. Individual and group tours of our unit were conducted to promote awareness of our organization and welcome new faces to the RFB&D New Jersey family.

Lions Club International Foundation, New Jersey Lions Charitable Foundations Districts A, B, D and E and Lions of Hammonton donated a recording booth. The Lions’ Booth is expected to contribute at least 800 recording hours toward our 2007 goal.

Dear Friends of the New Jersey Unit,

RFB&D New Jersey’s 2006 fiscal year was a challenging one as the unit weathered several unforeseen changes. Despite those bumps in the road, we persevered and continued to gain momentum toward fulfilling our mission. By evaluating our operations, tightening up internal processes and responding to member, donor, and volunteer feedback, RFB&D New Jersey made the necessary course adjustments to make the year a success.

The lessons we learned in 2006 will continue to remind us how important our mission is to the lives of the people we serve. We must succeed and we must grow because so many students with print disabilities are depending on us. As they seek to enrich their lives and achieve academic success through our audio books, we can do no less than our best to continue to provide this service for them while reaching out to more people that need us each year. This is what motivates us every day.

With fiscal 2007 already underway, we recognize the need to serve even more students. We have a vision for greater visibility of our work throughout the state. This year’s goals include forming a planning committee to help map out the steps we need to take to make our vision a reality. Made up of members of the Board of Directors, volunteers and staff, the committee will fine tune our five year operating plan into a blueprint that will guide our endeavors with a mission-conscious strategy.

Amazingly, 2007 will also mark our 50th Anniversary. RFB&D New Jersey was founded by community leaders seeking to provide books for the visually impaired. We evolved over the past half-century into our current role as a vital resource for all those with print disabilities. We will continue that evolution by committing to assist even more individuals in need of us in the future. We will measure these future successes by the links forged, bridges built, and unwavering support received from our members, supporters and communities. It will be a wondrous journey.

Statement of Activities

Year ended June 30, 2006 (with comparative totals as of June 30, 2005)

A primary research study of an urban school district conducted by the Graduate School of Education of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey in cooperation with the Educational Outreach Center of the New Jersey Unit of RFB&D concluded that, “The use of RFB&D’s Learning Through Listening program in the classroom has a positive effect on reading growth for students with mild to moderate learning disabilities…it is an assistive technology that can make a difference in schools.”

The New Jersey Unit board, staff, and members thank you for sharing our vision for all people to have equal access to the printed word.
